A small US-based company called Solar Roadways are developing a solar road surface that, if installed on roads nationwide, has the potential to produce more renewable energy than the entire country uses.
On these solar panels you can “drive, park, and walk on. They melt snow and… cut greenhouse gases by 75-percent” and they could have interesting implications for microgrids in resilient communities.
This project isn’t going to be cheap, and Solar Roadways are currently hoping to raise $1 million in their Indiegogo campaign (they’ve already raised almost $200,000) to hire engineers to make final modifications and move from prototype to production.
